The 4th Social Entrepreneurship Conference in Cyprus on Investing in Social Entrepreneurship & Innovation provided a powerful forum for social innovation in Cyprus and in Europe., “the first bi-communal digital platform connecting Cypriot entrepreneurs,” was presented on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the 4th Social Entrepreneurship Conference in Cyprus: Investing in Social Entrepreneurship & Innovation, organized by SYNTHESIS.

The conference, which took place in Nicosia, offered attendees the opportunity to:

  • Learn of the recent policy developments concerning the sector of Social Entrepreneurship in Cyprus
  • Discover Social Entrepreneurship policies and practices across Europe
  • Get to know innovative Cypriot Social Entrepreneurs and Social Enterprises, the work they do and the challenges they face
  • Learn of the European projects "European Social Entrepreneurs" and "Invest in Innovation" which develop and promote Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation
  • Learn of funding programmes related to social entrepreneurship and innovation
  • Participate in a round-table discussion to express your views on the policies needed to push-forward the sector in the country.



The Morning Session

Mr. Charalmbos Theopemptou, Member of Parliament, gave the keynote address on “the need for social entrepreneurship in Cyprus.”  The rest of the morning session, which focused on European social entrepreneurs,  was then followed by presentations from the likes of Dr. Allan Lawrence, Senior Associate of The Enterprise Center in the UK, who spoke about the European Social Entrepreneurs Project, Dr. Christopher Markides of the European Social Fund Unit in Cyprus who discussed “the experience of the European Social Fund Unit,” SYNTHESIS Founder and Director Mr. George Isaias, who spoke on “public policies that can support social enterprise development,” and many others.


The Afternoon Session

The afternoon session, which focused on investing in social innovation, was marked by continued presentations and discussions on initiatives such as (among others) the Invest in Innovation (IN2IN) project by Project Manager of Asset Tech in Greece, Ms. Marilena Maragkou and by Ms. Gillian Broadhead, Consultant, Learning Light, UK.  Mr. Nicos Ioannou of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry, and Tourism presented on “investing in the development of innovation for SMEs in Cyprus.”

CyprusInno’s very own Burak Doluay rounded out the afternoon session by presenting is a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs and startups from every corner of Cyprus. Founded by Steven Stavrou and Burak Berk Doluay, the site follows its mission to “provide tools for all Cypriot entrepreneurs that will help them connect, network, collaborate and exchange knowledge online to lead the social and economic growth of Cyprus” with the vision of “replicating Cyprusinno model, which uses entrepreneurship and innovation as peace-builduing mechanisms and paths to prosperity, in conflict regions across the eastern Mediterranean.”  They believe that the future of Cyprus is in the hands of its entrepreneurs, because entrepreneurs drive technological, political, and social innovation by challenging what exists and asking, “what’s next?”
